India-Bangladesh Ties Turn Sour As Yunus Calls For "Unity Against India"

Ties between India and Bangladesh hit a new low after Bangladeshi interim leader Muhammad Yunus' anti-India remarks. In an all-party meeting on December 4, Yunus called for unity against India, citing a disinformation campaign against efforts to build a new Bangladesh. Yunus' anti-India rhetoric followed New Delhi’s opposition to attacks on Bangladesh minorities. According to reports, Indian foreign secretary Vikram Misri will likely visit Dhaka on December 10 to focus on bilateral concerns and visa policies among other issues. The Indian foreign secretary's visit will mark the highest level of engagement between India and Bangladesh after Yunus took charge. The visit will follow India's criticism of violence against Bangladesh minorities who came under attack after former PM Sheikh Hasina’s ouster in August. In her first public address in New York, Sheikh Hasina accused Yunus of perpetrating "genocide" and failing to protect minorities.
