THE ONCE BEAUTIFUL CITY OF DRESDEN - THE ALLIES - OPERATION GOMORRAH 👊

IN JUST A HALF A HOUR THIS BEAUTIFUL WHITE CITY WAS TAKEN FROM THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ARCHITECTURE TO JUST RUBBLE KILLING THOUSANDS OF INNOCENT MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN WHO HAD NO IDEA THIS WOULD HAPPEN.

The Allies destroyed Dresden in 1945 as part of a strategic bombing campaign to weaken Germany's war effort:

Military objectives
Dresden was a key transportation hub and communication center, and home to many factories that supported the German war effort.

Break the spirit of the German people
The Allies wanted to cause as much damage and inflict as many casualties as possible to bring the war to a quick end.

Support the Russian advance
The Allies had promised the USSR that they would conduct bombing raids in eastern Germany to support the Russian advance on the Eastern Front.
 
The bombing of Dresden was a controversial operation that raised questions about the validity of area bombing in World War II:

Civilian casualties: The raid killed around 30,000 civilians, although estimates vary.

Military necessity: Some critics questioned the military necessity of the attack, and called it a war crime.

Could have been spared: Some say that Dresden could have been spared, like Rome, Paris, and Kyōto. 

The Allies used two waves of bombing on Dresden, with the first wave consisting of high explosives and the second wave consisting of incendiaries. The fire spread rapidly and destroyed Dresden, reducing entire neighborhoods to rubble.
