Did you know that the popular Christmas carol Joy To The World was not originally intended to be one? In 1719, English Minister and hymnist Isaac Watts wrote a book of poems in which each one was based on a psalm from the Bible, but written so as to reflect Jesus' life and work in the world as shown in the New Testament. One of the poems was based on Psalm 98. It was intended to present Jesus as King of His Church and of the world. The second half of that poem was adapted slightly and set to music. The music used is the 1848 arrangement by American composer Lowell Mason of a tune attributed to Géorg Frideric Handel. Since then, the song we sing as Joy To The World has become the most published hymn in North America, appearing in over 1000 hymnals.
