According to Boone's testimony at her two-week trial in October, Torres Jr. got into the suitcase willingly and playfully — but the woman never let him out once he was zipped inside.

James Owens, Boone's ninth attorney, maintained throughout the trial that the woman suffered from "battered spouse syndrome," which caused her to leave Torres Jr. in the suitcase because she feared he would kill her if she let him out.

According to multiple witnesses and Boone herself, the couple's relationship was plagued with violence. Two Orange County deputies took the stand during trial, confirming they had responded to multiple domestic calls at the couple's Winter Park home just a year before the murder.
