South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol lifted his martial law order after a chaotic night that saw lawmakers across the party lines block the surprise move. The president made the announcement late at night on December 3 and said it was needed to protect the country from "North Korea's communist forces" and to "eliminate anti-state elements". But less than two hours after his martial law declaration, lawmakers gathered at the National Assembly and voted to block his move. Some broke through barricades or climbed fences to get inside the building. There were scuffles between police and protesters outside. Calls are growing, both by lawmakers and protesters across South Korea, for President Yoon to be impeached.
