After a hazing incident at their elite college, step-siblings Caroline and Lucien set about to preserve their power and reputation by seducing the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. PV's Cruel Intentions series stars Sarah Catherine Hook as Caroline and Zac Burgess as Lucien, plus Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva, John Harlan Kim, Khobe Clarke, Sean Patrick Thomas, & Brooke Lena Johnson. Cruel Intentions is an American television series developed by Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman, and produced by Original Film, Sony Pictures Television, and Amazon MGM Studios for Amazon Prime Video. Part of the franchise of the same name, it is based on the 1999 film by Roger Kumble, which in turn was a modern retelling of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 novel Les Liaisons dangereuses.[1]
The series, set in a Washington D.C college among rich students, follows two manipulative step siblings who are ready to do anything to maintain their status. It features a cast led by Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, and Savannah Lee Smith.
Plan for a television adaptation of the film started in 1999 at Fox with a prequel series that was later retooled as the 2000 direct-to-video film Cruel Intentions 2 following its cancellation due to creative concerns. In 2015, NBC picked up a television pilot for a continuation of the film's storyline with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning but later passed on the project. Amazon announced a new project's development for Amazon Freevee in 2021, with Neal H. Moritz returning as an executive producer. It was given a series order in April 2023, and moved to Prime Video several months later. Filming took place in Toronto and began in June 2023.
Cruel Intentions premiered on Amazon Prime Video on November 21, 2024 to generally negative reviews.

Development
In 2015, NBC picked up a television pilot for a continuation of the 1999 film Cruel Intentions with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning but later passed on the project. Following that, Sony Pictures Television announced that the project will either be shopped to other networks or completely redeveloped.[4][5] Amazon Studios announced that a new project was being developed in October 2021.[6]
It received a series order, and filming was set to begin in April 2023. The series is developed by Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman who are set to executive produce alongside Neal H. Moritz.[7] Upon the main cast announcement, Pavun Shetty, Andrea Iervolino, Monica Bacardi, and Bruce Mellon were added as executive producers. Original Film, Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment, Sony Pictures Television, and Amazon MGM Studios are producing the series.[2] Eight episodes were ordered for Amazon Prime Video instead of Amazon Freevee.[8]
Casting
In June 2023, Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, Khobe Clarke, Brooke Lena Johnson, Sara Silva, John Harlan Kim, and Myra Molloy joined the starring cast with Sean Patrick Thomas as Professor Chadwick, having previously appeared in the original film as Ronald Clifford. The recurring cast includes Laura Benanti and Jon Tenney.[2] Additional recurring members announced in December 2023 were Claire Forlani, Nikki Crawford, Isabella Tagliati, and Zeke Goodman.[8]
Filming
The series began shooting in June 2023 in Toronto.[9][10]
Release
The series was released on November 21, 2024 on Amazon Prime Video.[11]
Reception
The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 38% approval rating with an average rating of 5.5/10, based on 13 critic reviews. The website's critics consensus reads, "Neither as fun or transgressive as the original Cruel Intentions, this television adaptation doesn't cut deep enough to make much of an impression."[12] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 38 out of 100 based on 8 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable" reviews.[13]

Although Sarah Catherine Hook and Zac Burgess play conniving step-siblings with questionable boundaries in Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Prime Video‘s Cruel Intentions reimagining, this duo isn’t your mother’s Kathryn and Sebastian.
Ahead of the eight-episode series’ Thursday premiere on the platform, the actors behind Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont discussed the “collaborative experience” of creating their characters with showrunners Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher, as well as pilot director Adam Arkin.
“They were so specific, they were like, ‘We don’t want to copy and paste, we really want a fresh voice, a fresh take on this,'” explained Hook. “And I personally thought that was so smart. And I’m so thankful because you don’t feel like you have to try to match what’s going on there. So, they really gave us a lot of creative liberties, and it just made our job so much easier and took the pressure off as well, being able to step in, and just adding this new chapter in the Cruel Intentions universe.”

‘Cruel Intentions’ Series Order Confirmed At Prime Video; Full Cast Set
In the new iteration of the 1999 film and the 1782 novel Dangerous Liaisons by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, Caroline and Lucien are at the top of the Greek ladder at the fictional elite Manchester University in Washington D.C. The series still includes the same indecent wager, this time with Caroline attempting to get the vice president’s daughter Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith) to rush her sorority as Lucien begins developing feelings for her.
And although the characters and setting are new, the show features plenty of nods to the original, including a kiss between Caroline and Annie reminiscent of an iconic scene between Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Kathryn and Selma Blair’s CeCe in the movie.

“Well, it’s funny because once we read the script, Sara Silva, who plays CeCe was like, ‘That was supposed to be me!'” said Hook. “She was not happy about that. And I think even Savannah was like, ‘Yeah, maybe it should be CeCe.’ I don’t think she really wanted to do it. But of course we had to add it, and I’m personally so glad that it got to be on there.”
Also a departure from the Roger Kumble-helmed film, the series features Claire Forlani as Claudia Merteuil, Caroline’s mother and an important insight into her cruel behavior.
“It was so much more informing for me to be able to understand the relationship that Caroline had with her mom, because it then informed our relationship as characters,” explained Burgess. “And that opened up the world for me so much more and allowed my imagination to run.”
Hook added, “I feel like that’s what the show needed, and it kind of helps ground the characters a bit more as well, understanding that this is a really fun show but also there’s a lot of humanity here as well.”
Read on for Sarah Catherine Hook and Zac Burgess’ experience reimagining Cruel Intentions.
DEADLINE: Tell me about crafting your cruel personas.
ZAC BURGESS: Lucien is entirely different from me as a human being. Surprisingly, I’m not as cruel as him. But I was incredibly fortunate, I got to work with the showrunners Phoebe and Sarah and pull apart Lucien’s mannerisms, his behavioral patterns, his characteristics, likes and dislikes. And so my job became so much easier because I had so much information at my fingertips to be able to pull apart and play with.
SARAH CATHERINE HOOK: Yeah, I would agree with that for myself, and I think for everyone. I’ve actually been thinking about it a lot, it feels like we all were playing characters. None of us were really playing ourselves. So, the script obviously really informed us. What we were saying, I don’t think any of us would actually say the words that they’re saying in real life. So that alone did it enough for us, and then of course, wardrobe hair and makeup, all of it really informed our posture, our mannerisms, like you said, like everything. So, all of that really made our jobs very easy. We just had to show up and just do it nice.
DEADLINE: So, you’re not playing Kathryn and Sebastian, these are new characters. Tell me how you differentiated your characters from those, but also if there were any Sarah Michelle Gellar or Ryan Phillippe nods that you wanted to include?
BURGESS: Well, I still haven’t seen the film.
HOOK: Yeah, he still hasn’t seen the film, which I kind of love. I love that you haven’t seen it because it’s like you’re representing the people who will not have seen the film and then I’m representing the people who are like die-hard fans of the film. So, it’s good we have both at the helm. But I don’t know, especially in the audition room, for me in the director session with our showrunners, Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher, and then our pilot director Adam Arkin, we created Caroline’s voice in that room together. It was a collaborative experience and they were so specific, they were like, “We don’t want to copy and paste, we really want a fresh voice, a fresh take on this.” And I personally thought that was so smart. And I’m so thankful because you don’t feel like you have to try to match what’s going on there. So, they really gave us a lot of creative liberties, and it just made our job so much easier and took the pressure off as well, being able to step in, and just adding this new chapter in the Cruel Intentions universe.

DEADLINE: What was the cruelest thing your characters did this season? Was there anything that felt hard not to judge them?
BURGESS: Mine is like right at the end.
HOOK: Mine is too. I mean, so many things she did, pretty much all of seven and eight. I will just say that, episodes seven and eight. I was like, “Oh my God, who is this girl? This is scary.”
BURGESS: So, I think Lucien’s in a real place of hurt in this particular moment. He’s at his wits end and there’s a big sort of character arc where he changes significantly, seemingly overnight. And then there’s a little revenge taken and little rendezvous with a certain someone.
DEADLINE: Speaking of which, one thing the movie didn’t really touch on was the parents. Tell me about adding Caroline’s mom Claudia (Claire Forlani) into that dynamic and how it brings more toxic family energy.
HOOK: Well, I think it was smart to bring her into the mix so we could understand why Caroline is the way she is. I feel like that’s what the show needed, and it kind of helps ground the characters a bit more as well, understanding that this is a really fun show but also there’s a lot of humanity here as well. So, I was glad that they chose to bring in the parent dynamic, for sure.
BURGESS: Absolutely. And it was so much more informing for me to be able to understand the relationship that Caroline had with her mom, because it then informed our relationship as characters, and that opened up the world for me so much more and allowed my imagination to run.
Zac Burgess and Claire Forlani in Cruel Intentions. (Jasper Savage/Amazon/MGM Studios)
DEADLINE: There are some really great callbacks to the movie, the necklace, the car, the retirement home, the music. Did you have a favorite Easter egg?
BURGESS: I mean, I’ve seen some scenes of these on YouTube. I’ve seen small clips. I think there’s two, probably one’s the tree moment when he first sees Annie, and the pool.
DEADLINE: What was it like shooting that scene?
BURGESS: That was traumatic.
HOOK: Yeah. You guys fell down the stairs at one point.
BURGESS: We had a little mishap on set, it was no one’s fault. It was just a freak slippery accident and it involved some stairs and a bit of water.
DEADLINE: I feel like the kiss scene with you and Savannah was also a nod to the Central Park scene. Can you tell me about that?
HOOK: Yeah, absolutely. Well, it’s funny because once we read the script, Sara Silva, who plays CeCe was like, “That was supposed to be me!” She was not happy about that. And I think even Savannah was like, “Yeah, maybe it should be CeCe.” I don’t think she really wanted to do it. But of course we had to add it, and I’m personally so glad that it got to be on there, and I can continue my job as a woman-kisser on camera. It’s where I belong, man. So yeah, I’m very glad that it made it. That was a good Easter egg, for sure.
DEADLINE: Since Lucien doesn’t die in this, that obviously leaves things open for a second season. Where do you see your characters progressing to after this?
BURGESS: Yeah, that’s big. I mean, we finish this season on a pretty big cliffhanger, and I think it does leave a lot of room for character growth, definitely for Lucien. He finishes in a pretty vulnerable strong spot, and I’m intrigued to see if we’re given the opportunity to jump into a second season, to play with that more.
HOOK: Yeah, for sure. I’m more eager to see just what Sara and Phoebe come up with, because I know they’re just gonna let loose. We’re gonna run wild if we get to go to Season 2. because now, we’ve all really established these characters and we know what to do when we get there. So, I honestly have no clue what they have in store, but I trust it will be brilliant.
Sean Patrick Thomas in Cruel Intentions. (Jasper Savage/Amazon/MGM Studios)
DEADLINE: I also loved seeing Sean Patrick Thomas return play a version of the character he was playing before. What was it like working with him?
HOOK: Sean Patrick Thomas is so lovely and so professional, and I’m really, really glad that we had him. He’s the perfect addition to this cast. I know he and Sara Silva work together the most, and he was super respectful. They obviously had to get quite intimate, as I did as well. And honestly, it was so easy. It was just like, “Yeah, let’s do it.” There wasn’t really any fear with him. I felt very safe and at ease with him and it just felt like we were doing just another scene. But he’s so lovely and we’re so lucky to have him and he’s such a great actor as well.
BURGESS: He’s incredibly lovely. We only had a couple of interactions, just because of the scenes that we were shooting at different times. But we had some wonderful chats and it was incredibly nice being able to have his presence on set.
DEADLINE: Any other cameos you’re hoping for in Season 2?
BURGESS: To be honest, I’d be happy for anyone to come.
HOOK: I was just gonna say the same thing, I would truly be happy with any one of them… No! I have someone who needs to come, because she was in Dangerous Liaisons as well. But Swoosie Kurtz, she had a role in Dangerous Liaisons and then she played the woman in the very beginning of Cruel Intentions, she’s Sebastian’s therapist. I think she needs to make a cameo because she was in both. She’s got to be in this world with us at some point. Maybe [Lucien] goes to therapy and she’s a therapist.

Cruel Intentions follows the students of Manchester College, and the malicious games of seduction they play for their own amusement and the joy of wreaking havoc with people's lives. The Prime Video series is based on the 1999 film of the same name, which is, in turn, based on the 1782 French novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos.
Cruel Intentions' lead characters, Caroline and Lucien (Sarah Catherine Hook and Zac Burgess), are step-siblings who make a bet involving the sexual fate of Annie Grover, the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. As their depraved games get more and more out of hand, with more and more students roped into playing roles as pawns in their plot, the siblings must decide just how far they are willing to go to consolidate their power in Manchester College. While the characters are certainly despicable in their own way, Cruel Intentions manages to remain consistently funny due to its tongue-in-cheek sense of humor and satirical edge.

The Cruel Intentions trailer reveals Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon's replacements in the remake series coming to Prime Video.
ScreenRant interviewed Hook and Burgess about their work on Cruel Intentions. They spoke about how their characters compare to their counterparts from the 1999 movie, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe, and how they were instructed not to copy those iconic performances in an effort to let the show stand on its own merits. They described the setting as "the timeless present," right down to the show's treatment of mobile phones, which really only have one noteworthy use.
Cruel Intentions' Sarah Catherine Hook & Zac Burgess On NOT Copying The 1999 movie
"I still haven't seen the film... It was a creative choice not to mimic them."
Lucien touches Caroline's chin in Cruel Intentions series
Screen Rant: It's a delight to see that you are human beings, actors. This is just a part.
Sarah Catherine Hook: They're not real people. Yeah, I get it. I get it.
On one hand, we love going, "Oh, these characters are so depraved." They make, you know, this version makes Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar look like, you know, Bert and Ernie.
Sarah Catherine Hook: (Laughs) Oh my god, that is, wow. I think, thank you, appreciate that. Wow. I'd have to disagree because I love them, but thank you.
But at the same time, there's part of us, as viewers, that wants to see these characters make the most depraved choices just to see how it plays out. Is this a feast as an actor to get to be so deliciously cruel?
Zac Burgess: I mean, we don't get to do it in real life. I mean.
Sarah Catherine Hook: Exactly.
Zac Burgess: If we did, I think we'd probably...
Sarah Catherine Hook: We'd be in jail!
Zac Burgess: No, it's gold. It's incredible to be able to dive into something so meaty and just f***** up.
Sarah Catherine Hook: It's exactly what you just said, though. Like, it's such a feast and we are just eating it all up and wreaking havoc. It's the best.
In terms of your performances and in the direction that you get in the direction that you want to take your characters, tell me how you play against, and play with, the versions from the movie and kind of wanting to pay homage without copying and doing your own thing.
Zac Burgess: I had a pretty easy job. I still haven't seen the film! (Laughs) I've seen little snippets here and there on YouTube, but it was a creative choice to not mimic them.
Sarah Catherine Hook: Right. And we were told, right from the start, "Do not copy their performances." Like, in the audition breakdown, before the roles were even ours, it was to everyone auditioning, "Do not copy." I think at first, you're like, wait, what? How else am I supposed to do this? But then it's so much more creatively fulfilling and liberating to be able to come in with your own ideas and opinions about the character, and being able to take those creative liberties to do that and give them a new voice and a new look and everything.
I was shocked even when they wanted me to be blonde. I was like, "But she's a redhead in the film! That doesn't make sense!" Like, you want her blonde? But even little touches like that, I feel those were really strong. And even that just separates it from the movie. We're very thankful we got to...
Zac Burgess: I didn't realize she was redhead!
Sarah Catherine Hook: Well, she's like, it's auburn, I should say. Not really. Maybe it's dark brown. I don't know.
Zac Burgess: I don't know either.
Sarah Catherine Hook: You definitely don't know! (Laughs)
Sarah Catherine Hook & Zac Burgess On The "Timeless Present" Of Cruel Intentions
"It's set in modern day, but still has those elements of a story that's been around for hundreds of years."
Caroline leans over the railing in Cruel Intentions series
It's interesting because there's something at once universal about people of this particular age in this particular situation, where it's the future leaders of America or whatever. But the story itself is hundreds of years old. Tell me a little bit about playing this very specific, 2024 version of characters, archetypes that go back so many hundreds of years.
Sarah Catherine Hook: Yeah, such a good question and point because what we've been saying about this is, this show is set in this timeless present. I, for one, am so glad that our showrunners decided not to really incorporate things like TikTok or even just, like, being on our phones. They wanted our characters to be...
Zac Burgess: In this sort of timeless present.
Sarah Catherine Hook: Yeah. And just not on our phones as much as possible. Like, if we had to make a phone call as the character, fine, but they didn't want us like texting a lot. Even if we were just waiting for another character to come into the scene, they would rather me reading a book than texting on my phone. Like, they wanted it to be...
Zac Burgess: It takes the emphasis away from the actor.
Sarah Catherine Hook: Absolutely.
Zac Burgess: And you're, rather than focusing on someone's performance, you're focusing on what's happening on someone's screen, which you can do anytime.
Sarah Catherine Hook: Yeah. But it was great because it's set in modern day, but still has those elements of a story that's been around for hundreds of years. I think that they were really smart to make a point of that, to not modernize it too much that it loses what the story really is and where it comes from.
Zac Burgess: It's also an incredible and rare opportunity because, I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, there's seven archetypes that we can't really escape, seven core archetypes. And this is a world that really focuses on just one of them for the main part, all about gaining power. It's an incredible opportunity to be able to play with that.
Well said. And phones are for sex tapes. That's it.
Zac Burgess: Yes, they are! Yes.
Sarah Catherine Hook: (Laughs) That's it. In our show? Exactly.
Zac Burgess: Absolutely. A little kink, a little fetish.

25 years since we dabbled in debauchery and casual incest with Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair, Cruel Intentions has been rebooted as a TV series. While you watch the new trailer with a fresh new cast, I'll go and take a massive sip from the wrong holy grail.
The eight-episode Prime Video show sends you into the vicious sororities and fraternities of Manchester College, where stepsiblings Caroline Merteuil (First Kill's Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Boy Swallows Universe's Zac Burgess) are social royalty. And they're unhealthily obsessed with each other. They're on a mission to seduce the vice president's daughter, Annie Grover (Gossip Girl's Savannah Lee Smith) and clamber their way back to campus glory following a violent hazing incident.
Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher, who both adapted the I Know What You Did Last Summer series, are the showrunners and writers for the series, with original Cruel Intentions director Roger Kumble executive producing alongside them. The original film was already an adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' Dangerous Liaisons, so maybe there's more to dig into than we saw in the 1999 film. Or maybe we're just in for more uncomfortable helpings of on-campus incest scored to "Bittersweet Symphony", who can say?
Cruel Intentions is streaming on Prime Video Nov. 21
