How to Find your Irish Roots

The search for Irish ancestors begins in counties in Northern Ireland. During the 18th century, the largest number of Irish emigrants to America arrived in Pennsylvania. They assembled in groups and soon left Pennsylvania to embark upon a dangerous journey across the American plains and Indian country.

A big clue is that these groups adopted their old Pennsylvania county names in the new location. Thus, counties in South Carolina and other regions adopted the old county names, such as Chester, Lancaster, Susquehanna, Bedford, Washington, Northumberland, Warren, Bucks, etc.

Presumably, the Irish in South Carolina landed in Charleston. Yet a larger population took the old wagon trails from Pennsylvania through Virginia and North Carolina. The largest settlement of Irish and Germans was in the Shenandoah Valley.

You can quickly discover if your Irish relatives are in old wills and estates. The names are furnished (select county records) on georgiapioneers.com, kentuckypioneers.com, northcarolinapioneers.com, southcarolinapioneers.net, and virginiapioneers.net
