I have already recently tried several colour multicolour flashlight kits including a couple from Odepro and so I was interested to see what this new model, the Odepro KL62 Plus, has to offer.
I received the 25.4mm x 155 mm 233g flashlight in a branded and robust plastic storage case, a cut above the lightweight generic case provided with some of the others. Inside was the torch itself, two 18650 3000 mAh rechargeable Batteries, an external two Battery Charger with a USB power cable, Picatinny and Scope mounts, a Pressure Trigger Switch, an O ring set, and an excellent user guide. Build quality was first rate, with the flashlight made from heavy duty aluminium alloy and everything else equally robust and well made. The battery charger, I should say, was also of very decent quality and a step up from the cheaply made chargers included with some rivals.
This set is built around a well specified IPX6 waterproof torch with three switchable colour light options - red, green and white The kit comes with two different types of mounts to secure the torch to a rifle, bow or other tubular object. Also included is a pressure switch which replaces the end cap off/on button with a low noise soft touch switch. The flashlight is powered by a single 18650 Lithium Polymer battery which is recharged through the supplied external charging unit as there is no charging port on the torch itself. The inclusion of a spare battery in the kit is a useful bonus.
When used as a regular torch it is not too exciting. The 540 lumen white light output is relatively low although there is a zooming option. It has no strobing feature but it does offer true stepless dimming and a tailpiece status LED.
This torch comes into its own when used as it is designed to be with the coloured light options. Some torches I have used have a single multi-headed LED, others a simple lens filter, and some separate LED modules which have to be changed over. I am not sure how this one changes colours, the user guide does not inform us, but I suspect it may be a multi mode single LED. Whatever it is, the operation could not be simpler, just rotate the large and well marked selector switch on the body of the torch. Each coloured light beam features a clearly defined central hotspot to aid focus and aiming.
Light Output and Range
Green Wide- 131 Lumens. 50m, Spot - 70 Lumens 344m
Red Wide- 120 Lumens. 48m, Spot - 60 Lumens. 274m
White Wide- 540 Lumens 92m, Spot - 380 Lumens 536m
Operating the torch is nice and simple. There is a single tailpiece button, soft press it to noiselessly turn the light on, release and it turns off. Press firmly and it clicks on and stays on, click again to turn it off. Rotate the button to steplessly dim the light. The remote switch, which screws in to replace the tailpiece, has clearly marked buttons for power and brightness up and down.
The two included mounts seem excellent and very similar to others I have seen in rival kits although the scope mount is of much higher quality construction, One is a rather simple single screw unit, probably designed for bow or general use and fits 20mm Picatinny/Weaver rails (whatever they are). The Picatinny/Weaver mount is made from metal and features a quick-release mount and is designed to fit a 20mm rail.
Here in the UK with the use of firearms severely restricted the appeal of this flashlight may be limited but naturalists and wildlife enthusiasts may still find a use for it and for them, the £104.98 price will not seem too much.
