Once, a baron discovered in the Book of Fate that his son would marry a lowly girl born near York Minster, so he took the girl from her poor family, threw her into a river, and rode away. Miraculously, she floated ashore and was rescued by a fisherman, growing up to be a beautiful young woman. Years later, the baron encountered her while hunting, realized her identity, and deceived her with a letter intended to have her killed, but robbers found her and rewrote it to arrange her marriage with the baron's brother’s son instead. When the baron visited his brother's castle, he was shocked to find the girl married to his son. Attempting to dispose of her again, he took her for a walk and demanded a token, throwing his ring into the sea. The girl eventually became a scullery maid at a noble's castle, where she discovered the ring inside a fish she was cleaning. After preparing the fish for dinner, she presented herself in the hall wearing the ring, which led the baron to recognize her and accept her as his son's true wife, after which they all lived happily ever after.
