Falls from height are a leading cause of fatalities in the construction industry worldwide, with developing countries experiencing disproportionately high rates due to factors like inadequate safety regulations and training.
While precise global statistics are challenging to obtain, the International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that, globally, the construction sector accounts for about 20% of all occupational fatalities, with falls being a significant contributor.
In South Africa, for example, the construction industry is responsible for approximately 150 fatalities and 400 injuries annually, many resulting from falls.
