Used Electric Vehicle Prices Are Plummeting: Why It’s a Bargain for Some Buyers
The prices of used electric vehicles (EVs) are dropping fast — almost like timber being chopped down. The market for used EVs has seen a sharp decline in value, largely because of low demand and a shift in the market for new EVs. As the market adapts to changing conditions, new electric vehicles are getting price cuts, and the demand for used EVs just isn’t there like it used to be.
So, why is this happening?
Zero Demand for Used EVs: The market simply doesn’t have the same incentive it once did for electric vehicles, especially used ones. With new EVs being offered at incredibly low prices, it’s tough for used models to compete.
Low Lease Options: In some states, you could lease a new EV for as little as $20 or $30 a month. In Colorado, for example, some EV leases were priced under $100 a month due to government incentives. These kinds of deals make the used market hard to sell into, driving down prices even further.
Bargain Opportunity for Buyers: Even if you’re not a huge fan of electric vehicles, this price drop might be too good to ignore. If you're in the market for a second or third car — for commuting, groceries, or short trips around town — a used EV could be a fantastic, cheap alternative. Even if you’re not ready to switch to an electric vehicle as your primary car, having one as a secondary vehicle could save you thousands.
Potential Incentives: In some states, you can still find incentives for used EVs, making them an even better deal. It could be a way to get into an electric vehicle without breaking the bank.
For those who are just looking for a low-cost, reliable car to get around, used EVs are worth considering. Even if you’re skeptical about electric vehicles, their current pricing is hard to ignore. And with the government incentives still available in some areas, you could get an EV for a fraction of the cost of a new gas-powered vehicle.
Is a used electric vehicle the right choice for you? If you're thinking about buying one, make sure to check insurance costs as they can vary depending on the make and model.
