Russian And Syrian Jets Intensify Attacks In Rebel-Held Territory Of Syria

Russian and Syrian airstrikes targeted the rebel-held city of Idlib in northern Syria on Sunday, according to military sources, as President Bashar al-Assad pledged to defeat insurgents who had advanced into Aleppo. Jets bombed other towns in Idlib province, which had fallen completely under rebel control in the boldest rebel assault for years in a civil war where front lines had largely been frozen since 2020. The assault marked the return of rebel forces to Aleppo, which had been recaptured by Assad and his allies in 2016. The offensive, launched on November 27 by the Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) group, has led to the deaths of 412 people, according to a war monitor. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also held talks with President Assad on Sunday. Meanwhile, the US, Germany, France, and the UK jointly called for de-escalation in Syria.
