Few works of literature have inspired as many retellings across all mediums as Charles Dicken’s classic tale of redemption, A Christmas Carol.
The world over, one would be hard-pressed to find someone who knows nothing of Scrooge, Merry Christmas or bah humbag. Even cultures that do not practice Christianity, have come to recognize its lessons about the evils of miserliness. The influence of this novella, written nearly 200 years ago, remains today.
Only a handful of artists, like Frank Capra, have dared to rework the familiar story into an entirely new one as was done in It’s a Wonderful Life. Mostly, artists have contented themselves with making adaptations of Dicken’s work, because the story itself molded past and present culture like few other pieces of literature outside of Shakespeare’s have done.
