The citadel has stood for centuries and is a historical symbol of the city.

From 2012 to 2016, several dozen Syrian soldiers successfully held the defense in the citadel, effectively being surrounded by militants until the city was completely liberated.

Now there are no signs of resistance, Aleppo itself and all fortified positions are surrendering without a fight.
