On October 14, 2024, a tragic incident unfolded in Detroit involving an off-duty police officer who was reportedly experiencing a severe mental health crisis. The officer, a 45-year-old veteran of the Detroit Police Department's Special Response Team, called 911, claiming there was a suicide in progress. When responding officers arrived at the scene near Davison and St. Aubin streets, the off-duty officer fired shots into the air and then at the officers, wounding two officers. One officer was struck in the leg, while the other was hit in the thigh.

In response, one of the wounded officers returned fire, fatally injuring the off-duty officer. Both injured officers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and are currently in stable condition. The off-duty officer, who had been with the department for 13 years, had recently returned to duty after being on leave due to a degenerative health issue and had no prior history of mental health concerns.
