Quinn- Food aggression and neurological malfunction

Quinn has food aggression and also a bit of a mental instability issue. Normally I dont lean in that direction but his issue arises when he's tired, resting or sleeping and can sometimes seem a bit random, like mood swings. If he lays down and his owners walk by, he can lunge, growl and show teeth. He sometimes makes a higher pitched groveling noise which is an indication that he's in a mood. He sometimes wakes up growling and can be aggressive when approached. If he is relaxing with you, your petting him, he may start to growl, or he'll growl and get up and leave to avoid trouble. He can make better decisions when it comes to food aggression, Self correcting, walking away or just being more relaxed in general. But he does not make better decision when it comes to his mood swings other than maybe walking away or the fact that he respects me and knows there will be consequences, he will make his growl low grade. He has never lunged at me except 2 times in his crate. One you will see in this video. So he has enough control to avoid corrections but not enough to change how he feels about certain situations. Sometimes you cant change a dog, but rather manage them. Whether he changes or not will be something for the owners to find out as they continue working with him. Today is his birthday. He's exactly one year old. Now is definitely the time to be consistent with him and not allow him to push those boundaries. Often when dogs reach 2 or 3 they can come of age and become more controlling and bossy. Showing strength, confidence and consistency now is what could keep him from crossing the line in the future. So far he has not bitten because he lacks confidence, but if the owners lack confidence or become intimidated, that can all change.
