The Sanderling: Close Up HD Footage (Calidris alba)

The Sanderling is a small wading bird you'll often spot running back and forth along beaches, following the waves like a wind-up toy. These little birds are about the size of a sparrow and have pale grey feathers in winter, changing to a rusty-brown colour in summer. If you're walking along the coast, you might see them in small groups, busily pecking away at the sand looking for tiny creatures to eat.
These hardy birds are amazing travellers, flying thousands of miles between their Arctic breeding grounds and wintering spots as far south as South America and Africa. They're quite easy to recognise because of their pale white belly and their rather plump, rounded shape. When they feed, they're constantly on the move, which makes them fun to watch.
Sanderlings mainly eat small crabs, insects, and molluscs they find in the sand. They're clever feeders too - they've learned to watch for bubbles in the sand that show where their prey is hiding.
