Reading of the 1560 Geneva Bible - Day 332 of 366 (Acts 9-11) Season 2 - "The Transformative Encounters of Faith"

In tonight's reading, we delve into the remarkable narratives of Acts, chapters 9 through 11, where the early church experiences transformative encounters that shape its mission and identity.

Chapter 9

The story begins with Saul, a fervent persecutor of the Christian movement, determined to arrest followers of Christ in Damascus. As he journeys, a blinding light from heaven strikes him down, and he hears the voice of Jesus, asking why Saul is persecuting Him. This divine encounter leads to Saul's conversion as he is taken to Damascus, where he remains blind for three days. Meanwhile, God sends a disciple named Ananias to restore Saul’s sight, and Saul is baptized, becoming a devoted apostle. He starts preaching in the synagogues, astonishing many with his transformation. However, Saul faces opposition and threats from the Jews, prompting his escape from Damascus. Eventually, he arrives in Jerusalem, where he meets the apostles, though they initially fear him. Barnabas comes to Saul's defense, advocating for his acceptance into the community. As Saul continues his ministry, the church experiences peace and growth throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria.

Chapter 10

The narrative shifts to Cornelius, a Roman centurion known for his piety and charitable acts. In a vision, God instructs him to send for Peter, who is staying in Joppa. Simultaneously, Peter has a vision of a sheet filled with unclean animals, symbolizing that God has made all things clean. This prepares Peter for the moment he is to visit Cornelius. When Peter arrives at Cornelius's home, he is astonished to find that God’s message extends beyond the Jews to Gentiles. As Peter shares the gospel, the Holy Spirit falls upon Cornelius and his household, affirming their faith. The event marks a significant turning point, reflecting God’s desire for all people to receive salvation, regardless of their background.

Chapter 11

The news about the Gentile conversion reaches the apostles in Judea, causing concerns among the Jewish believers about Peter’s actions. When Peter returns to Jerusalem, he explains his experience and the command he received from God, clarifying that he did not act on his own but was directed by divine revelation. He recounts how the Holy Spirit fell on the Gentiles as it had on the Jews, leading to their baptism. This explanation reassures the apostles, who then praise God for granting repentance to the Gentiles. The chapter concludes with the growth of the church in Antioch, where disciples are first called Christians, affirming the expanding reach of the gospel.

These chapters capture pivotal moments in the early church’s journey, emphasizing the power of transformation, the breaking of cultural barriers, and the spreading of the gospel to all nations.
