Jackson Police Sergeant Shot During Pursuit shootout of Lenawee County Murder Suspect

On November 6, 2024, at approximately 5:09 pm, the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office contacted Jackson County Central Dispatch to advise area law enforcement of a shooting suspect being tracked into Jackson County. The suspect allegedly shot his brother in Lenawee County at approximately 4:30 pm. The vehicle was electronically tracked in Jackson County. The suspect vehicle was a maroon van.
Officers from the Jackson Police Department saw the suspect vehicle in the 1000block of Cooper Street on the northeast side of the City of Jackson. Officers then began coordinating efforts with Sheriff’s Deputies to stop and apprehend the suspect.

When law enforcement officials approached the suspect vehicle, the suspect fled from the scene at a high rate of speed. Officers and Deputies then initiated a pursuit of the vehicle. Within the first minute of the pursuit, the suspect began firing a weapon at pursuing law enforcement.

Multiple shots were fired at pursuing officers and deputies while the suspect attempted to get away. Several vehicles and homes were shot during the course of the pursuit, fortunately, no citizens were harmed.

However, at approximately 5:41 pm, near the intersection of Van Dorn and Elizabeth Streets on the City’s east side, a sergeant from the Jackson Police Department was shot by the suspect. The bullet went through the sergeant’s arm and into his body. A Deputy from the Sheriff’s Office transported the injured Sergeant to the hospital. He is currently in good condition at Henry Ford Hospital.

Converging Officers and Deputies then were able to stop the suspect. Multiple shots were fired during the attempt to apprehend him. During the exchange of gunfire, the suspect was shot and incapacitated; no other Officers or Deputies were shot.

Lifesaving efforts were performed at the scene. The suspect was taken to Henry Ford Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Both the Deputy and Officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending internal investigations by their respective agencies.
