Week 7: Living Remote In Haida Gwaii, BC As Winter Caretakers For 6 More Months

Week 7 on Haida Gwaii has been a real mix of adventure and adjustment. We are super grateful to be here. The rain's been relentless, but whenever the clouds broke, we headed out for hikes to soak up every bit of sunshine we could. We’re still in full-on food prep mode, preserving everything we can to make it last through the next six months. Our fresh produce is officially gone, so we’re adjusting to life without quick runs to the grocery store. No more fresh peaches, apples, peppers, or tomatoes—just us and what we’ve stored or can grow. We’ve started planning out veggies, herbs and even got some seeds going, which feels like a whole new experience in self-reliance.

As we settle into this way of life, we’re also diving deeper into the island's history and its incredible ecosystems. Haida Gwaii is like no place we’ve ever been—its landscapes and hidden mysteries are endlessly fascinating. With a break in the rain and the wind finally calming down, we’re itching to hop in the kayaks and explore a new spot we’ve been eyeing. We also checked our trail cams this week and got a bit of a shock—a huge black bear right up the river from us! Definitely a wake-up call to how wild and unpredictable things are out here. This lifestyle is all about adapting, and each day’s bringing something new to learn and appreciate.
