Reading of the 1560 Geneva Bible - Day 330 of 366 (Acts 3-6) Season 2 - "Miracles, Deceit, and the Rising Church: A Journey Through Acts"
In tonight's reading, the early days of the Church unfold with remarkable events and growing tensions.
Acts Chapter 3
Peter and John, filled with the Spirit, are on their way to prayer when they encounter a man who has been unable to walk since birth, begging by the entrance of the temple. Peter, moved with compassion, declares that he has no silver or gold but offers healing in the name of Jesus Christ. Miraculously, the man's feet and ankles are strengthened, and he leaps and praises God, drawing a crowd. Peter seizes the moment to preach about Jesus, emphasizing his death and resurrection while calling on the people to repent.
Acts Chapter 4
As Peter and John share their message, they are confronted by the religious authorities, angry at their teachings about the resurrection of Jesus. The apostles are arrested but persist in proclaiming their faith. The following day, they stand trial before the rulers and are boldly defended by Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit. Despite the threats and warnings from the authorities, they continue to share the good news, demonstrating unwavering courage and the power of faith.
Acts Chapter 5
The church community experiences deceit when Ananias and Sapphira sell a piece of property but withhold part of the proceeds while pretending to donate the full amount. Their lie leads to shocking consequences: both are struck dead for their hypocrisy, instilling a sense of awe and fear among the believers. Despite this incident, the apostles continue to perform signs and wonders, and the church grows in strength, faced with both miraculous growth and increasing persecution from the religious leaders.
Acts Chapter 6
As the number of disciples increases, tensions arise between Greek-speaking and Hebrew-speaking believers over the care of widows. To address this issue and ensure equitable support, the apostles gather the community and appoint seven deacons, including Stephen, to oversee the distribution of resources. This decision allows the apostles to focus on prayer and ministry, and the church continues to flourish with newfound unity and purpose.
