Reading of the 1560 Geneva Bible - Day 329 of 366 (John 21; Acts 1-2) Season 2 - "The Final Revelations and the Birth of a Movement"

In tonight's reading, we embark on a remarkable journey through the final interactions of Jesus with His disciples and the explosive beginning of the early Church.

John, Chapter 21

After His resurrection, Jesus reveals Himself once more to His disciples by the Sea of Tiberias. In an intimate gathering, Simon Peter and six other disciples are fishing but catching nothing. Jesus appears on the shore, instructing them to cast their nets on the right side, leading to a miraculous catch of fish. Recognizing Him, they return to share a meal with Him. During this meal, Jesus reinstates Peter, asking him three times if he loves Him and commanding him to tend His sheep, symbolizing Peter’s restored role as a leader. Finally, Jesus hints at Peter's future and teaches His disciples to focus on following Him rather than worrying about others.

Acts, Chapter 1

The story continues as the author addresses Theophilus, recounting the events after Jesus' resurrection. For forty days, Jesus appears to His disciples, teaching them about the Kingdom of God before His ascension. He instructs them to remain in Jerusalem and wait for the promised gift of the Holy Spirit. The disciples gather and engage in prayer, seeking guidance as they choose a replacement for Judas Iscariot. Matthias is chosen by casting lots, becoming one of the twelve apostles.

Acts, Chapter 2

As the day of Pentecost arrives, the apostles gather in unity. Suddenly, a powerful sound like a rushing wind fills the house, and they are filled with the Holy Spirit. They begin to speak in various tongues, signaling the presence of God among them. Witnesses from different nations are amazed at hearing their own languages. Peter steps forward to explain this miraculous event, declaring the fulfillment of prophecy and proclaiming the message of Jesus’ death and resurrection. This passionate sermon leads to the conversion of about three thousand people, marking a pivotal moment in the birth of the Church and the spread of Christianity.
