The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating a bizarre sequence of events Thursday night involving a stolen skid loader, smashed up patrol cars and shots fired by police at a suspect going on a rampage in a Hastings neighborhood.

According to the Hastings Police bulletin, a 15-year-old boy from Glenvil, was taken into custody for flight to avoid arrest, second degree assault of an officer, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, theft by unlawful taking, criminal mischief and terroristic threats.

NSP said the teen has been taken to a juvenile detention facility in Madison.

This all started around 8 p.m. Thursday, when Hastings Police responded to a call for a skid loader traveling south on North Elm Avenue.

Nest camera video from Thursday night captured a skid loader traveling through town with police vehicles in pursuit.

According to police, authorities located the construction equipment near E. 13th St. and North Pine Ave. and attempted to contact the driver, who then began using the equipment to ram police patrol units.

The department said the suspect damaged three occupied patrol cars before going westbound on 14th St.

There was significant damage done to the law enforcement vehicles, with a video above showing one catching on fire.

Hastings Police sharing several images of the vehicles in a post on social media Friday.

During the encounter, police said an officer fired their weapon at the skid loader and did not hit the suspect.

The suspect then continued to avoid police until stopping in the 1600 block of N. Lincoln Ave. Law enforcement then used chemical munitions to stop the suspect and get them into custody.

The 15-year-old was taken to Mary Lanning Healthcare for medical clearance before being taken back into police custody.
