As two Charleston police officers arrived along a downtown sidewalk where two men were reportedly fighting, they immediately noted one had his hands in his pants pockets — a potential indication to law enforcement a person could be armed.

Officers Anthony Vazquez and Darren Schlegel shouted at 37-year-old Andrew Reynard Williams to show his hands. Williams, as seen in body worn camera footage released by Police Chief Chito Walker on Nov. 22, pulled out a gun.

Within moments, both officers shot Williams. It was just before 10 a.m. Nov. 21 at the intersection of King and Line streets, near where Williams was listed as living in the 500 block of King Street. He died shortly afterward at a local hospital.

The police chief provided details about the shooting and released the video the day after the shooting.

While the State Law Enforcement Division is leading the investigation, Walker said he was compelled to release the video to balance a bystander video that was published online.

"We are aware of a video circulating from a bystander that shows a portion of the encounter," Walker said. "While I understand such footage can raise questions, it's important to note that the video lacks important context."

The cameras worn by Vazquez and Schlegel began recording as the officers left their vehicles at the scene. Both men can be heard shouting at Williams to get his hands out of his pockets and put them up. Once Williams pulled out a gun, the officers yelled at him to drop it.

The footage cuts right as the officers fire their weapons.
