A 16-year-old has been charged with murder after shooting and killing a 39-year-old man in northeast Columbus on Wednesday.

The family of Alejandro Lopez-Lachuga said they were stunned when they found out the suspect was just 16 years old.

"I feel shocked that a 16-year-old could take my brother’s life," Alejandro's brother, Mauro Lopez-Lechuga, said. "I can't believe how quickly they arrested him. But now there is one less guy in the streets that can hurt people like they hurt my brother."

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther also reacted to the incident.

It’s deeply frustrating. It makes me angry. Not just as the mayor, but as a father. We need to continue to double down. We've seen some dramatic progress with reductions in homicides and violence, but we have to keep investing in prevention, intervention and enforcement. - Mayor Andrew Ginther

Alejandro's family said the suspect was trying to break into their work van after midnight on Wednesday. They said when Alejandro confronted him, the teen suspect shot him.

Detectives said they got video evidence from the scene, which helped them find the teen and his vehicle. Police set up surveillance and followed him, eventually attempting a traffic stop.

Police said the suspect exited the passenger side door and started running down the sidewalk while holding a rifle. Officers fired at the teen, injuring him.
