A video that has been seen hundreds of times on social media shows a Mentor Police Officer almost hit by another driver during a traffic stop.
Sergeant Jeremy Calhoun has been with the Mentor Police Department for ten years. He says on November 15th he pulled over a driver for going through a red light.
However, when he was walking back to his cruiser, another driver came flying down the road, almost plowing him over.
“Thankfully I was paying attention because it could have been tragic if I wasn’t,” says Sergeant Calhoun.
If you take a close look at the video, you can see Sergeant Calhoun jump into his car split seconds before his driver-side door gets hit.
“When I played the video back and broke it down frame by frame. Seeing how close it was for me to get my legs in the door before getting hit was a lot closer than I will ever be comfortable with,” says Sergeant Calhoun.
The video from Sergeant Calhoun’s dash cam shows the car hit the cruiser and part of the door fly off into the road.
“I saw this vehicle coming towards me. There was a vehicle behind me. I couldn’t go backwards, I couldn’t go anywhere else. The only decision I had was to open my door and jump in the car,” says Sergeant Calhoun.
This almost tragic incident uncomfortably familiar for the Mentor Police Department. Six years ago, they lost one of their own, Officer Mathew Mazany, during a hit-and-run crash.
“It could have been a tragedy. It kind of goes with the stress of the move-over laws. It doesn’t just have to be a police car on the side of the road. It is anybody on the side of the road,” says Sergeant Calhoun.
Sergeant Calhoun want the public to know that Police Officers don’t always have control of where drivers pull over, so you always need to be paying attention.
“You need to give people room because you never know what could happen,” says Sergeant Calhoun.
The driver that almost hit Sergeant Calhoun says he didn’t see the police lights.
That driver was given a ticket, and it is up to a judge on what happens next.
