Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg Address from the movie 'Saving Lincoln'
02/17/2013
"Tom Amandes, as Lincoln, recites the Gettysburg Address not in a booming style of saying it's a great speech, but casually, as if he were chatting over dinner. This approach gives the words a higher meaning." - New York Times

"Saving Lincoln" is the true story of Abraham Lincoln and his close friend Ward Hill Lamon, with sets created from real Civil War photographs.

When Abraham Lincoln (Tom Amandes) is elected president, he brings only one friend with him to Washington: his banjo-playing, pistol-toting law partner Ward Hill Lamon (Lea Coco). When the first assassination attempt occurs in 1861, Lamon appoints himself the president's bodyguard. From this unique perspective, Lamon, as commander in chief, witnesses every aspect of Lincoln's trial by fire, soothing his tormented soul and saving him from repeated assassination attempts. Lamon even introduces Lincoln at the Gettysburg Address. Lamon is not present on the fateful night at Ford's Theater in 1865 because Lincoln sends him on a mission, but it is Lamon who re-writes this tragic event in surprising and upliftingways.

Opinion | Trump tries on his crown - The New York Times

JAMELLE BOUIE
Trump's crown doesn't fit
November 22, 2024
By Jamelle Bouie
Opinion columnist
The Constitution is not a grant of power to a king.
Instead, it is an authority of the sovereign people to establish a republican form of government - a representative democracy with limited and enumerated powers. And the republican character of American constitutional government is expressed in the way it divides the executive, legislative, and judicial branches into separate institutions.
"In establishing a free government," notes 19th-century Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story in his "Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States," this division "has been considered by many as a maxim of vital importance, that those powers should forever remain separate and distinct." When those powers are blended in a single individual, "such a form of government is called despotism, since the whole sovereignty of the state is vested in him."

Eric Foner Interview: Abraham Lincoln & Understanding the Complexity of Slavery's End Life Stories
July 11, 2022 #kunhardtfilmfoundation #EricFoner
Historian Eric Foner explains the significance of the four slave states (Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri) that did not secede from the Union during the Civil War. He discusses the development of Abraham Lincoln's prejudice, the joint effort to abolish slavery, racist laws such as the Black Codes, and other challenges of Reconstruction.

Eric Foner is a prominent American historian born and raised in New York City. He studied at Columbia University, the University of Oxford, and Oriel College, and returned to Columbia for his doctorate. Foner was the DeWitt Clinton Professor of History Emeritus at Columbia, specializing in the Civil War and Reconstruction, slavery, and 19th-century America. He is one of only two people to serve as president of the Organization of American Historians, the American Historical Association, and the Society of American Historians. He has also curated several museum exhibitions, including the Chicago Historical Society's award-winning "A House Divided: America in the Age of Lincoln." His book, "The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery," won the 2011 Pulitzer, Bancroft, and Lincoln Prizes. His most recent book is "Gateway to Freedom: The Hidden History of the Underground Railroad." According to the Open Syllabus Project, Foner is the most cited author in college history course syllabi.

The Apple TV+ series "Lincoln's Dilemma" features insights from journalists, educators, and scholars, as well as rare archival footage that provides a more nuanced look at the life of the great liberator. Set against the backdrop of the Civil War, “Lincoln's Dilemma” also gives voice to the stories of enslaved people, paints a fuller picture of an America divided on issues of economics, race and humanity, and highlights Lincoln's fight to save the country no matter what the cost. The series is narrated by award-winning actor Jeffrey Wright (“Angels in America”) and features the voices of actor Bill Camp (“The Night Of”) as Lincoln and Leslie Odom Jr. (“Hamilton”) as Frederick Douglass.

The Battle of Gettysburg began about 8 a.m. west of the McPherson Barn, as Union cavalry faced Confederate infantry advancing east along the Chambersburg Pike. Heavy fighting spread north and south along this ridge as additional troops from both sides arrived.
