The Promise of Resurrection: Turning Sunsets into Sunrise
Today, we’ll reflect on the promise of the Resurrection a central truth of our faith that transforms how we view life, death, and eternity.
Through the words of St. Clement of Rome and Scripture, particularly Hebrews 10:10, we’ll discover how God continually reminds us of the Resurrection in creation and the sacrifice of Christ. Let us open our hearts to this truth that turns all our sunsets into sunrise.
As St. Clement so beautifully said:
"The Lord has turned all our sunsets into sunrise."
God’s Promise of Resurrection:
The Resurrection is the cornerstone of our faith. Without it, as St. Paul writes, our faith would be in vain (1 Corinthians 15:17). The Resurrection assures us that death is not the end but the beginning of eternal life. St. Clement reminds us of this truth when he writes:
"The Lord has turned all our sunsets into sunrise."
In the darkest moments of our lives, God’s providence brings light. This truth is not abstract it’s deeply personal. Each trial, loss, or “sunset” we face is an opportunity for God to work in our lives, drawing us closer to Him and leading us to the hope of eternal joy.
Hebrews 10:10 confirms that this hope is made possible through Christ’s sacrifice:
"By this 'will,' we have been consecrated through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."
The offering of Christ’s Body on the Cross is the definitive act that consecrates us. Through His death, we are freed from sin, and through His Resurrection, we are given the hope of eternal life. The sacrifice of the Mass makes this mystery present to us every day, reminding us that we are participants in His victory over death.
Resurrection in Creation:
St. Clement’s reflections take us deeper into this mystery by pointing to the world around us:
"Think, dear friends, how the Lord continually proves to us that there will be a resurrection to come, of which he made the Lord Jesus Christ the first-fruits by raising him from the dead. Contemplate the resurrection that is always going on. Day and night declare the resurrection to us. The night sinks to sleep, and the day rises; the day departs, and the night comes on."
Every sunrise reminds us of Christ’s Resurrection. Just as the night gives way to the light of day, so too does death give way to eternal life. This cycle, present in creation, is a daily reminder of God’s promise to us.
St. Clement also uses the image of a sower scattering seed:
"The sower goes out and throws it on the ground, and the scattered seed, dry and bare when it fell on the ground, is gradually dissolved. Then out of its disintegration the mighty power of the Lord’s providence raises it up again, and from one seed come many bearing fruit."
This image echoes Christ’s words in John 12:24:
"Amen, amen, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falling into the ground die, it remaineth alone. But if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit."
Just as the seed must die to bear fruit, so must we embrace the sacrifices and trials of this life, trusting that they lead to eternal life. Through this, God reminds us of His power to bring life out of death.
Living the Resurrection:
How do we live as people of the Resurrection?
1. Trust in God’s Providence: Like the cycle of day and night or the growth of a seed, God is always at work, even when we cannot see it. Every “sunset” in our lives is preparing us for the sunrise of His grace.
2. Participate in the Sacrifice of Christ: The Mass is the heart of our faith, where we encounter Christ’s sacrifice and Resurrection. By receiving the Eucharist, we are nourished and strengthened to live as witnesses of the Resurrection.
3. Be a Witness of Hope: In a world that often fears death and clings to despair, we are called to reflect the light of Christ. As St. Clement shows us, the Resurrection is not only a future event but a reality we can live out today by trusting in God’s promises.
Conclusion:
The promise of the Resurrection transforms everything. As St. Clement reminds us, even the cycles of nature declare this truth: the night gives way to day, the seed dies to bear fruit, and Christ’s death leads to eternal life.
Let us live as people of hope, consecrated through Christ’s sacrifice and continually reminded of God’s providence in all things.
Ending Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the gift of Your Son, who through His death and Resurrection has given us hope and eternal life. Help us to trust in Your providence, even in the darkest moments, knowing that You are always at work, turning our sunsets into sunrise.
May we live as witnesses of the Resurrection, bearing fruit in our lives and sharing the light of Christ with all we meet. Strengthen us through the Eucharist and guide us on the path to eternal joy.
We ask this through the intercession of St. Clement and in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
St. Clement of Rome, pray for us.
Thank you for joining me on Tradition Restored. Until next time, may the light of Christ shine in your life and guide you toward the eternal sunrise. God bless you!
