On November 3, 2024, at approximately 8:30 p.m., a Department of Public Safety (DPS) Police Officer attempted to stop a Chevrolet Suburban for a traffic violation on Chippewa Street near Daisy Avenue, leading to a vehicle pursuit. During the pursuit, the Chevrolet crashed into the officer's fully marked patrol unit on Brownlee Street south of Bawell Street before accelerating toward the officer, who was standing nearby. The officer discharged his firearm, striking two of the three vehicle occupants.

The injured individuals were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The driver of the Suburban, 33-year-old Tyler Pugh of Baton Rouge, suffered minor injuries and was later released from the hospital before being booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on outstanding warrants. The other subject struck by gunfire sustained serious injuries and remains hospitalized. The third passenger was uninjured.
