Sovereign wealth funds are basically state-run and owned pension funds, backed by real assets for their people. As we talked about in our Social Security series (linked here), the Social Security Trust Fund, when looked at in this light does NOT qualify as a sovereign wealth fund. So let's look at the largest entities that actually have real assets for their people. Notice there are many petro states. However, notice that state-level (not Federal) pension fund schemes do exist in the United States.
