The Cowboys are over halfway through the season with only a few wins, but the season isn’t over yet. Let me tell you how it can still be salvaged.

### 1. **Give Deuce Vaughn a Real Shot**
Deuce Vaughn hasn’t had many opportunities since being drafted. At Kansas State, he averaged 24 carries a game at 5.3 yards per carry, finishing second in rushing in school history. The Cowboys thought highly of him to use a fourth-round pick, so why not see if he’s a legitimate roster player for next year? Fourth-rounders like Jake Ferguson, Tony Pollard, and Dak Prescott have proven to be game-changers—Deuce deserves a chance to show what he can do.

### 2. **Play Trey Lance**
The Cowboys traded a fourth-round pick for Trey Lance, who was drafted as a franchise quarterback. With limited offensive threats, Lance’s dual-threat ability could spark the team and make defenses respect the post-hand-off action. His mobility could also help receivers get open and provide a much-needed spark to a dejected team. If he doesn’t perform, it’s time to move on and free up his roster spot.

### 3. **Utilize KaVontae Turpin**
KaVontae Turpin clocked a blistering 22.36 mph against the Texans—the fastest time recorded this season. Why not give the ball more to the fastest guy in the league? Even a few big plays could force defenses to spread their focus beyond just CeeDee Lamb.

### 4. **Commit to the Run Game**
The Cowboys need a consistent run game. Running back committees with similar styles—like Dowdle and others—don’t help. Giving Deuce Vaughn or Rico Dowdle a featured role could provide a new dynamic. If a committee is necessary, at least use backs with different styles to keep defenses guessing.

### 5. **Fix the Penalties**
Penalties are killing the Cowboys. My coach used to say penalties are mental mistakes caused by fatigue. Improving conditioning might sound basic, but cutting penalties is key to turning things around.

### **A Strategy to Salvage the Season**
Here’s what the Cowboys should do but likely won’t:
1. Use read options and multi-back packages to increase run success.
2. Commit to the run game to control time of possession, even when trailing.
3. Get the ball into the hands of dynamic players like Trey Lance, Deuce Vaughn, and KaVontae Turpin.

### **Why It Matters**
These changes would support Mike McCarthy’s idea of complementary football by:
- Keeping the defense rested and the offense on the field longer.
- Helping struggling quarterbacks with better coverage looks and viable play-action threats.
- Giving the offensive line a break with run-blocking opportunities.

While the playoffs remain unlikely, these moves would at least provide clarity for the future.

### **A Moment to Reflect**
This is Dallas Cowboys Breakdowns, where I break down Cowboys games and share a bit about something more important—God. Today, I want to share 2 Chronicles 12:14:
“And he did evil, for he did not set his heart to seek the Lord.”

This verse is about King Rehoboam, showing how neglecting God can lead to evil. It’s a reminder to seek God in all things. While that might feel overwhelming, Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

That’s the gospel: man’s sin separates us from God, but through Jesus, the gap is bridged.
