State representatives are trying to close a tax loophole that they say is used by big box retailers, to cut property taxes that is costing local government services more than $2 billion a year. Lawmakers call it the “dark store theory,”. Retailers tell the Michigan Tax Tribunal that functioning stores should be assessed the same as vacant ones, significantly lowering property taxes. A bi-partisan group of State Rep’s is hoping to change that and get bills heard and passed this December.
