Hospital admissions for stroke rise 28% since 2004 - NHS urges public to 'ACT FAST'

Stroke
The number of people admitted to hospital after a stroke has risen by 28% over the past 20 years, new analysis from the NHS has found.

NHS England data shows a rise to 111,137 stroke admissions in England in 2023/24 - up from 87,069 in 2004/05 - partly due to an ageing population and the impact of lifestyle factors on the country's cardiovascular health.

There was also a 55% increase in admissions among people aged 50-59 (8,063 in 2004/05 compared to 12,533 in 2023/24) - the highest increase of any age group. In comparison, the increase for those aged 60-69 is 42% and for those aged 70-79 it is 25%.

The figures come after the NHS launched a major campaign urging the public to call 999 immediately if someone is experiencing any of the 3 most common symptoms of a stroke, including difficulty smiling (face) or raising an arm (arms) or slurring speech (speech).

England's top doctor said the figures showed that strokes were "not just a risk for older people" and that it was important everyone knew the symptoms to look out for and knew to call 999 quickly.
