In 1994, Susan Smith gained international attention after claiming that a carjacker, a black man wearing a toboggan hat, had stolen her car with her two young sons, 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alex, inside. She pleaded for their safe return for 9 days, but investigators soon found inconsistencies in her story. Smith said a carjacker had taken her car late at night near Union, South Carolina, but the details didn’t add up—such as the fact that the car's lights wouldn't have been green at the time she said the theft occurred. Eventually, Smith confessed to driving her car into John D. Long Lake, where her sons were found dead, still strapped in their car seats, with 1 little hand pressed against the window. Smith was convicted of two counts of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
On November 20, 2024, Smith appeared before the parole board for the first time, seeking release after spending 30 years behind bars. Despite her claim that God has forgiven her, the parole board unanimously decided to keep her incarcerated. Smith is now eligible for parole hearings every two years
