and Facts

Emperor William II, the Rabbi and the Germans as Amalek "When Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany made his famous visit to Jerusalem in 1898, all the city's leading clergy were invited to a lavish reception in his honor. However, two ultra-Orthodox rabbis refused to participate, one of them was the ardent anti-Zionist Joseph Hayyim Sonnenfeld. Years later, when asked why he did not participate despite the rare opportunity to recite the ritual blessing at the sight of a royal person, Rabbi Sonnenfeld is said to have replied: "I had heard from my late teacher, R. Judah Leib Diskin, about a tradition attributed to R. Elias, the Gaon of Vilna, that the German nation descended from Amalek... and how could I bless a monarch with the divine name who ruled over a people whose memory we have been commanded to destroy?"
