California Governor Gavin Newsom will delay his decision on clemency for Lyle and Erik Menendez, convicted of murdering their parents in 1989, until newly elected Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman completes his review of the case.

Newsom’s office cited respect for Hochman’s role in ensuring justice. Current DA George Gascón, who supported the brothers’ clemency petition, had requested resentencing for them.

Hochman, set to take office in December, has pledged a thorough review of the case.

The Menendez brothers were convicted of first-degree murder in 1996 after claiming self-defense due to years of alleged abuse by their father, CNN has reported.
