The Rock Dove, which most of us know as the common pigeon, is one of the most widespread birds in our cities. These clever birds originally came from coastal cliffs in Europe, North Africa, and western Asia. While many people think of them as a nuisance, they're actually quite remarkable. They can find their way home from massive distances thanks to their brilliant sense of direction - they can even use the Earth's magnetic field and the position of the sun to navigate!
These birds usually mate for life and both parents help raise their chicks, which is quite sweet. They typically lay two eggs at a time and can breed year-round if there's enough food about. You'll spot them in all sorts of colours, from the typical blue-grey with two black wing bars to white, brown, or mottled patterns. They're proper tough birds too - they can live up to 15 years in the wild and adapt brilliantly to city life, making the most of buildings and bridges just like they once used cliff faces.
