On December 8, 2020, 20-year-old Chloe Driver is accused of fatally stabbing her 13-month-old daughter, Hannah, in their home in the Mountain View subdivision of Cherokee County. When police arrived, they found both Chloe and her daughter in an upstairs bedroom. Chloe was rushed to the hospital with self-inflicted injuries, while Hannah was taken to the hospital, where she later died from her wounds.
Chloe has pleaded guilty by reason of insanity to charges of malice murder, two counts of felony murder, aggravated assault, and cruelty to children. According to her defense, she had been experiencing severe psychotic episodes, including paranoia, hallucinations, and disordered thinking. Chloe’s defense also points to her lifestyle—she was part of a plural marriage and had been living a nomadic life as contributing factors to her mental state.
The prosecution, however, argues that Chloe understood the wrongfulness of her actions. They claim she deliberately grabbed a kitchen knife, locked herself and her daughter in a bedroom, and stabbed both her child and herself. Investigators also found that she made disturbing online searches related to the stabbing before the incident occurred.
