Interesting the choice of words back in 1889. Looking back at the time as a territory and the adventure to get to statehood.

Montana was the 41st state to be admitted into the Union on November 8, 1889. For sixty years prior to establishment of the Territory of Montana in 1864, seven different territories of the western United States governed the area that was to become Montana.

Montana Territory
Until they had such control, federal supervision over their local affairs was the source of constant frustration. Montana's time of frustration lasted for twenty-five years, from the creation of Montana Territory in 1864 until the territory was admitted to statehood in 1889.

After years of serving as territories, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Washington all join the Union as new states in November 1889.
