Colin “Smiley” Petersen, the original drummer of the Bee Gees, has died at the age of 78. Petersen played a pivotal role in the band’s early years, contributing to iconic hits like To Love Somebody.

The Best of Bee Gees announced his passing:
“It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our dear friend Colin ‘Smiley’ Petersen. He enriched our lives and bound our group with love, care, and respect. We’re not sure how we can go on without his glowing smile and deep friendship. We love you, Col. Rest in Peace.”

Known for his creativity and group-centered approach to recording, Petersen reflected in a 2022 interview about how the band often entered the studio without songs fully written, allowing him to experiment with tempos and rhythms.

Despite not being the most technical drummer, Petersen believed simplicity fostered creativity, likening his approach to Chuck Berry’s iconic minimalism: “For me, it was always about serving the song.”

Petersen earned the nickname “Smiley” as a child actor, starring in the Australian film of the same name before joining the Bee Gees in their formative years.

He is survived by his ex-wife Joanne and their two sons, Jaime and Ben.

Fans and musicians worldwide shared heartfelt tributes:
“RIP Colin Petersen, 60s Bee Gees drummer, child actor, nice man.”
“We are losing our Bee Gees family. #RIP Colin, you were a magical part of the #BeeGees sound.”

The Gibb family, including the late Maurice and Robin, also expressed their sadness over the loss of their beloved bandmate.

Colin Petersen’s legacy lives on in the timeless music he helped create.
