After feeding on algae, these slugs retain functional chloroplasts in their tissues, allowing them to photosynthesize like plants and produce energy from sunlight.

While the efficiency of their photosynthesis is not as high as that of plants, it is significant enough to sustain the leaf sheep for extended periods without additional food, especially in sunlight-rich environments.

This unique adaptation makes them one of the few animals capable of harnessing solar energy directly.
