Posted • November 18, 2024: A man who killed three family members at home in Tijeras has escaped custody, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office says. On Sunday, October 13, 2024, a tragic incident unfolded in Tijeras, New Mexico. Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a call about gunshots at 55 Young Road. Upon arrival, they found 24-year-old Adlai Mestre, covered in blood and in possession of a gun and ammunition. Mestre confessed to killing his family members: his father Raymundo (46), mother Bertha (51), and sister Breille (17). He admitted to shooting them inside the home, dragging their bodies to a nearby ravine, and attempting to clean up the scene. He also confessed to shooting his dog, which had to be euthanized due to its injuries.

Evidence found at the scene included a knife, a meat tenderizer hammer, and potential signs of stabbing, in addition to gunshot wounds. Mestre's erratic behavior and delusional statements, such as references to seismic waves and cell tower attacks, raised concerns about his mental state. While being detained, Mestre managed to escape from the BCSO interview room by punching a hole in the wall. He was quickly apprehended again. Mestre faces multiple charges, including three counts of first-degree murder, tampering with evidence, animal cruelty, escape, and property damage. Despite a previous visit to Haven Behavioral Hospital, authorities reported no indications of homicidal or suicidal tendencies at that time. The investigation into the killings is ongoing, pending autopsy results.
