German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, marking their first publicly announced conversation in nearly two years.

Scholz urged Putin to negotiate with Ukraine, while Putin insisted any peace deal must recognize Russia’s territorial gains and security demands, including Ukraine renouncing NATO membership.

Scholz called for Russia to withdraw its troops and end the invasion.

The call came amid growing concerns about Ukraine’s support and speculation about the incoming Trump administration’s stance.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy criticized the call, fearing it would weaken Russia’s isolation, the Associated Press has reported.
