Creating her nom de plum, Andre, Alice Norton may not have been making a defiant statement against the status quo at the time of her writing, which happened to heavily favor male authorship of science fiction and fantasy work, but it did create a great crack in the glass ceiling that did exist.
All of the writers of the day--up until today--took note of Andre Norton's talent and work. They knew who she was, and that she was a woman whose talent was not diminished, because she was a woman.
Whether her intention was a political one or simply a survival technique, Norton's storytelling survives in large part, because she created an alter ego.
