Trump’s Win Triggers Poison Craze on TikTok with Crazy Liberals: Inside the Aqua Tofana Revival
Last week, social media was flooded with footage of distraught women reacting emotionally to Donald Trump’s election victory, some claiming they had suddenly “lost rights.” This sadness has now turned into anger and bizarre behavior, with some individuals sharing content about poisoning men who supported Trump.
Videos circulating on platforms like TikTok reference "aqua tofana," a poison historically used in 17th-century Italy to kill abusive husbands. The substance, tasteless and colorless, acted slowly and was undetectable at the time. While small doses caused mild symptoms like a cold, repeated doses could lead to death.
These videos, tagged with the acronym MATGA (“Make Aqua Tofana Great Again”), show women jokingly claiming it as a "solution" to dealing with male Trump supporters in their lives. Some clips feature users adding liquid to drinks while captions like “your body, my choice” appear, often set to Eminem’s song “Venom.” Others share seemingly subtle advice, such as recommending the planting of poisonous flowers like foxglove, with hashtags such as #feminism and #womensrights. One post even jokingly encourages women to research plants carefully while presenting this as "educated gardening."
Search trends for “aqua tofana” spiked in the U.S. following the election results, alongside related phrases like “aqua tofana recipe” and “how to make aqua tofana.” Unsurprisingly, these videos have sparked widespread outrage. Many people are shocked that some women view this behavior, even as a supposed joke, as remotely acceptable. Critics highlight the disturbing implications, especially if such sentiments were acted upon in everyday settings like restaurants.
Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene called for the FBI to investigate, tagging them in a social media post that read:
“@FBI these are public death threats and must [be] investigated! These women are telling others how to poison and murder men because they are angry over the election. If you tracked down J6'ers, pro-lifers, parents angry at school boards, then you better go after these psychopaths!”
### A Shift to Radical Feminist Movements
Meanwhile, some women are channeling their frustrations into a different avenue: the radical feminist 4B movement. Popular in South Korea, the 4B philosophy encourages women to abstain from dating, marriage, sexual relationships with men, and having children. While the movement emerged in response to systemic gender inequalities and issues like digital sex crimes, it remains niche even in its country of origin.
In the U.S., the 4B movement is being embraced by some women post-election. One viral TikTok video with nearly 10 million views features a woman proclaiming, “Doing my part as an American woman by breaking up with my Republican boyfriend last night & officially joining the 4B movement this morning.” Another user shared a similar story, calling her breakup with a Trump-supporting boyfriend “the fastest, most uncomplicated breakup of my life.”
While some view these reactions as extreme, they illustrate the growing polarization and emotional intensity surrounding the election's aftermath.
