Dec. 18, 1964 - President Johnson, lighting the national Christmas tree, said tonight that “these are the most hopeful times in all the years since Christ was born in Bethlehem.” The chief executive pressed a button to light the towering 72-foot New York white spruce in the Ellipse, a park south of the White House. Earlier in the day, Johnson attended a Christmas party for children of White House staff members.
