Josef Fritzl was born on April nine, 1935, in Amstetten, Austria, to a family filled with dysfunction. His father abandoned them when he was a child, leaving him to be raised by his mother, Maria, who was reportedly abusive and erratic. Fritzl referred to himself as an "alibi child," believing he was conceived solely to prove his mother wasn't infertile. This harsh childhood significantly shaped his future actions — leaving him with deep-seated psychological trauma.
Despite a troubled childhood, Fritzl thrived in his studies and became an engineer. He attended a technical college and specialized in electrical engineering. His hard work and intelligence led him to a successful career as a technical expert in the field. He worked for several companies, earning a reputation for his acumen along the way. In fact, it was his professional achievements that allowed him to maintain an outwardly respectable life.
In the year 1956, Fritzl married Rosemarie, a woman who would stand by his side through much of his life. Together, they had seven children — Ulrike, Josef Jr., Elisabeth, Harald, Gabriele, Doris, and Rosemarie. To those around them, the Fritzls appeared to be a typical family. Josef was perceived as a dedicated husband and father, actively involved in his children’s lives and ensuring their needs were met.
The family lived in a large house in Amstetten, which Fritzl had bought from his mother. Upon buying the house, his mother decided to live with them. Tracing back his childhood trauma, he used to be fearful of his mother. But their roles have reversed over time. In other words, it was time for revenge. Josef had later locked his mother in the attic and bricked up her window after telling neighbors that she had died, and kept her locked up until her death in 1980.
In 1967, Fritzl's darker side emerged when he was convicted of assaulting a young woman. He served eighteen months in prison for this crime, but upon release, he resumed his life as if nothing had happened, maintaining the image of a respectable family man. This conviction, however, was a grim precursor to the atrocities he would later commit.
