Dec. 17, 1964 - Thirteen United States servicemen died in South Vietnam during the week ended Dec. 14, the Defense Department reported today. It was the largest weekly United States casualty toll of the Vietnamese war.
Ten of the men were killed in combat against the Viet Cong. Three died of other causes. Thirty-five men were wounded.
The deaths during the week brought to 339 the number of Americans who have died in Vietnam since Jan. 1, 1961. Of the total, 235 were killed in battle and 104 died from non-combat causes. The wounded figure stood at 1,442.
In related news, U.S. Military Headquarters in Saigon announced today that the body of an American adviser reported missing since Sunday had been found. He was identified as Sgt. Tommy D. Emert, whose widow, Margaret, lives in Fayetteville, N.C.
