Dec. 9, 1964 - Soviet Foreign Minister held an 80-minute conference with President Johnson today and reported the President was “pleased” at word of a reported cutback in Soviet military spending.
Earlier, Gromyko met with Secretary of State Dean Rusk in what was described as a “lively exchange” over Southeast Asia. Rusk reportedly asked Gromyko that the Soviet Union use its influence to halt Communist aggression in South Vietnam. Gromyko reportedly countered with a suggestion that the U.S. withdraw its 22,000 advisers from South Vietnam.
President Johnson also met with British Prime Minister Harold Wilson today. Wilson said he and Johnson had reached total accord on guidelines which they will follow in seeking establishment of an Atlantic Alliance nuclear force.
