Dec. 8, 1964 - In this video, Mario Savio — who turned 22 years old today — and other leaders of the Free Speech Movement at the University of California at Berkeley speak to a crowd on campus.
The video includes a segment where a man presents Savio with a gift set of clip-on ties, explaining how these will be useful when confronting police who wish to arrest him. Savio was dragged off the Greek Theater’s stage yesterday by police while wearing a tie.
It should be noted that the university’s Academic Senate met earlier today and voted 824-115 for the five-point proposal made by the Committee on Academic Freedom against control of students speech and political advocacy.
